Protecting the trademarks and the patents that a company intends to be exposed to China is one of the first steps that should be taken.

Before you start selling or producing your brands in China, protect them. If you plan to manufacture in China a component or system which you have patented outside China, protect it too.

In China trademarks and patents follow a parallel registry in which first-to-file is the awarding criterion.

Also, many companies protect their trademarks in one category and overlook some others to which they also need to keep their rights.

Finally, registering a trademark in China does not protect the exports from China in overseas markets, just the sales in the PRC.

 An additional filing must be done in Chinese export customs once the brand right is issued by PRC authority. This will entitle the brand holder to block the exports from China of any manufacturer in violation of your brand rights.
